Unique Places enhances land values across the Southeast.


The Unique Places Portfolio includes conservation communities with limited development, conservation partnerships that result in protected parkland, and conservation design projects that preserve family farmland. We engage in a projects located across the Southeast that range in scope from 25 to 5,000+ acres.

Unique Places partnered with the N.C. Chapter of The Nature Conservancy to add 59 acres to the Conservancy’s renowned Bluff Mountain Preserve, located near the North Carolina/Virginia border.
Box Creek Wilderness, near Union Mills, North Carolina, is a 3,300 acre, privately-owned property that is recognized as one of the top 25 Significant Natural Heritage Areas in the state in terms of the number of rare species and community types found there. Unique Places coordinates a team of foresters, ecologists and non-profit partners to manage and enhance this truly remarkable property.
Bridal Cove is a mountain preserve surrounded by the unspoiled beauty of North Carolina's High Country.
The Community's fear is that the historic Cates Farm would slip into the hands of developers. So, at the request of the City of Mebane, Unique Places reached out to the Cates Family in hopes of opening a dialogue on conservation alternatives
Unique Places partnered with Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy to add 239 acres of biologically significant land to the scenic Chimney Rock State Park in Western North Carolina.
Unique Places was hired by Franklin County’s Planning Department to develop an action plan for the Cypress Creek watershed. The hope is that solutions successfully implemented there will serve as a model for watersheds throughout the region.
Our Fontaine project located in Creedmoor, North Carolina, is shown in the context of Triangle area conservation assets, including water quality issues, public lands, natural heritage areas and recreation corridors. Connectivity between conservation assets is a science-based concept. For Unique Places, it is always a project objective.
UP contributed innovative GIS (Geographic Information System) mapping services to the project, helping to ensure that PCC and Guilford County had the best information available to guide important land use and farmland preservation decisions.
Unique Places worked with the Harris Family in North Carolina’s Franklin County to preserve their 3,200-acre family farm with a combination of forest and farmland easements.
A 19th century grist and sawmill in the Piedmont of North Carolina is a wonderful time capsule of the region’s recent history. When that mill is set amidst an intact dam, 180-acre forested mill pond, and borders several thousand acres of conservation land, then that mill takes on a whole new level of cultural and ecological significance – it reaches the level of a true community asset worthy of permanent protection.
Unique Places’ role began identifying the conservation assets, relationship to protected lands and designated conservation priorities. In addition, developing an understanding of the legal and financial nuances of the Club’s membership structure and shared ownership of its property assets - all critical elements in developing a conservation strategy that met the Club’s needs.
Unique Places and strategic partner, Frontline Conservation Real Estate, worked with the Episcopal Diocese to design ecologically sensitive home sites along Lake Logan, a pristine private-access lake spanning 80 acres in the Pigeon River Valley near Asheville, North Carolina.
Located in Chatham Co, North Carolina, Ore Hill is a veritable terrestrial history book. Here, the historic Revolutionary War ore mining and smelting has left an unique geo-ecological imprint on the site. Today, it is covered with rare natural communities similar to those found at Occoneechee Mountain State Park.
Located in Chatham Co, NC, Paschal Forest has remnants of a wide breadth of natural communities found in the Piedmont of North Carolina. After three years of targeted restoration work, the results are impressive.
Unique Places worked with Durham County to preserve 50 acres of working farmland and 32 acres of bottomland in the Little River Watershed, which feeds into the drinking water source for citizens in Raleigh, North Carolina.
After assessing the property, Unique Places realized it was exactly the kind of place that befit the company's name. We then determined that the best course of action--from both a conservation and investment perspective--was to buy Rivermont ourselves.
After detailed analysis and research, Unique Places helped create the Watauga County Agricultural Development and Farmland Preservation Plan. Funded by the NC Department of Agriculture, the plan offers a step by step road map for Watauga and similar mountain communities to shift from a waning farm economy to one that embraces the increased demand for local foods.
Unique Places worked with the N.C. Coastal Land Trust to help the Whitehurst family preserve a significant portion of the 1,600 acres they own near New Bern, North Carolina.
After being contacted by several conservation groups, each with their own goals in mind, the landowners found Unique Places per recommendation of an existing Unique Places client. Unique Places listened to, and understood the truly unique story of their family land. We then helped the family develop a conservation strategy that focused on their personal and financial goals.
