The Community's fear is that the historic Cates Farm would slip into the hands of developers. So, at the request of the City of Mebane, Unique Places reached out to the Cates Family in hopes of opening a dialogue on conservation alternatives
Our Fontaine project located in Creedmoor, North Carolina, is shown in the context of Triangle area conservation assets, including water quality issues, public lands, natural heritage areas and recreation corridors. Connectivity between conservation assets is a science-based concept. For Unique Places, it is always a project objective.
Unique Places worked with the Harris Family in North Carolina’s Franklin County to preserve their 3,200-acre family farm with a combination of forest and farmland easements.
A 19th century grist and sawmill in the Piedmont of North Carolina is a wonderful time capsule of the region’s recent history. When that mill is set amidst an intact dam, 180-acre forested mill pond, and borders several thousand acres of conservation land, then that mill takes on a whole new level of cultural and ecological significance – it reaches the level of a true community asset worthy of permanent protection.
Unique Places’ role began identifying the conservation assets, relationship to protected lands and designated conservation priorities. In addition, developing an understanding of the legal and financial nuances of the Club’s membership structure and shared ownership of its property assets - all critical elements in developing a conservation strategy that met the Club’s needs.
Unique Places worked with the N.C. Coastal Land Trust to help the Whitehurst family preserve a significant portion of the 1,600 acres they own near New Bern, North Carolina.
After being contacted by several conservation groups, each with their own goals in mind, the landowners found Unique Places per recommendation of an existing Unique Places client. Unique Places listened to, and understood the truly unique story of their family land. We then helped the family develop a conservation strategy that focused on their personal and financial goals.
