Unique Places is offering nine lots for sale within the 190-acre Bridal Cove preserve, located 15 miles northwest of Boone on the North Fork of the New River.
The Ashe County land is part of a 114-acre parcel located northeast of Bluff Mountain. Unique Places purchased the entire tract in May 2007, before it could be developed, then sold it to The Nature Conservancy in Oct. for inclusion the Bluff Mountain Preserve.
Bluff Mountain is home to over 400 species of plants, 25 of them endangered, rare of threatened. The newly added 59 acres is critical to water quality in the North Fork of the New River. It also provides wetland habitat for the Bog Turtle, listed as threatened by North Carolina and the World Conservation Union.
The Bluff Mountain project highlights Unique Places ability to protect land and partner with conservation organizations. In this instance, TNC expressed interest in the 59 acres once it went on the market, yet the sellers were unwilling to divide the 114-acre parcel. Unique Places harnessed private assets to buy the land, then held it until TNC raised the funds to purchase it.
After further evaluating the lands conservation value, Unique Places is now working with both The Nature Conservancy and the High Country Conservancy to place the remaining 55 acres under protection.
