Habitat for Humanity Digging in to Make a Difference Posted on September 22, 2014 by UPLLC

Group-photo_storyLast Thursday the Unique Places team had the amazing opportunity to pitch in at a Habitat for Humanity house. Ironically enough, the day was reserved for landscaping! The experience was one that our team will remember for a long time – making an impact in a real way in the lives of others really is its own reward.

Some facts we learned about Habitat for Humanity:

  • Homeowners purchase the homes from Habitat for Humanity at appraisal value. The homes are not given for free.
  • Homeowners receive 0% interest for the life of the mortgage loan. Habitat does not sell that loan.
  • Homeowners give sweat equity to the organization based on the number of adults who will be living in the home. One adult in the home must volunteer for 250 hours with the organization. More than one adult in the home and the required volunteer hours go as high as 450 hours.
  • 50-70% of each home is built by volunteers.
  • Volunteers, homeowners and staff work incredibly hard to make home ownership a reality.
